The duration of this unit is approximately 6 weeks, excluding the culminating event, a student multimedia presentation of the autobiographical section of his/her digital student portfolio.

Activity 196a: Teacher introduces the concept of the Student Portfolio as part of an integrated curriculum and a record of student achievement. Teacher explains the scoring rubric, performance & proficiency assessments, and the initial assignment, the "All About Me" template (MS for 8th grade, or HS for 9th grade and up), due by the next class period. |
Activity 196a Complete the form "All About Me MS"or "All About Me HS" as a self-awareness and planning activity. Teacher collects the "All About Me" templates for feedback and grading.

Clipart practice: Teacher introduces folder and file creation and organization, followed by a Claris Works Paint and Draw demonstration. Students create their portfolio folders and practice designing clipart in Claris Works Paint, working with the various tools and color palettes.

Activity 196b: Teacher demonstrates copy and paste tools for importing clip art to ClarisWorks Paint and colorizing or editing plain graphics for use in project. Students colorize a clipart image of their birth sign, selected from a Yukon clipart gallery folder.

Activity 196c: Teacher compares and contrasts similarities and differences between Claris Works Paint and Draw programs. Students take previous activity (196b) and work with it in Claris Works Draw.

Activity 196d: Teacher introduces the concept of using graphic conversion programs (e.g. Graphic Converter) to further edit their images and reduce file memory. Students then convert their Claris Works Paint and Draw clipart images in their "Images" folder.

Activity 196e Teacher demonstrates procedures for obtaining clipart from CD-ROM galleries. Students then search for and transfer clipart to a Claris Works Paint file using copy and paste functions. Students colorize or modify the image and convert for addition to their portfolios. |

Activity 196f: Students continue adding clipart to their portfolio image galleries using the procedures learned in previous activities. (Activities 196a through 196f and 196l complete rubric level 1, except for multimedia presentation.)

Activity 196g: Teacher demonstrates accessing the Internet to search for and obtain public domain images. Teacher introduces copyright and educational use policies for obtaining resources from the Internet. Students then practice transferring, downloading, copying, editing, and saving images to add more clipart to their portfolios.

Activity 196h: Teacher presents possible or sample (if available) layouts of student portfolios and demonstrates the importance of organization and navigation within the portfolio. Students begin designing the layouts for their portfolios. Rough draft of layouts due by the next class period. (Activities 196a through 196h and 196l complete rubric level 2, except for multimedia presentation.) |
Mini-project: create a personal logo, or pop quiz; teacher adjustments, re-teaching, Q & A, any feedback on project, timeline revisions (if necessary).

Activity 196i: Teacher demonstrates obtaining and editing images by using a color scanner. Students scan and edit images of original art, photos, or art from some scannable medium for inclusion in their portfolios.

Activity 196k: Teacher introduces the topic of a personal coat of arms, also known as a ìblazonî. Some examples of European heraldric blazons are shown, along with some personalized coats of arms. The students begin searching for sources of images (heraldric or non-heraldric), logos, or create their own clipart for inclusion in their personalized blazons. |

Activity 196k: Teacher describes Project 1A: "Personal Coat of Arms" (rubric level 4 challenge credit) for inclusion in the "All About Me" project, as well as, a stand-alone project for their student portfolios. As with the main project, students must get their logos from at least 3 different image sources. (Optional challenge credit: student creates new cover page for portfolio, which includes his/her personal blazon and at least one animated gif.) |

Activity 196l: Teacher demonstrates the use of storyboards for planning a multimedia production. Students then prepare rough draft storyboard outlines of their multi-media slideshow presentations due by the next class period. Activity 196m: Teacher demonstrates video editing by making single frame images and quick time movie clips from a video source; creating video from a slideshow; and mixing audio with video in the production process. Students then begin making videos of their student portfolio multimedia slideshow presentations (minimum time frame of 1 week, not to exceed 3 weeks). (Student can earn an additional 0.17 credit in multimedia technology for producing and showing a video. |
