Welcome to the world of mathematics! Math is the universal language of science and discovery. We use math every day of our lives in one form or another. It is an integral component of many jobs and professions, and the acquisition of math concepts and processes enables us to be successful, lifelong learners.

Attendance and Missed Work

After the first two weeks, your math class meets every other day for an extended period (either 95 or 100 minutes duration). Your attendance is very important because each class covers two hours worth of work.

If you are not in your seat by the time roll is taken, you will be considered tardy (up to the first 15 minutes of class time). Three (3) unexcused tardies equal one hour of unexcused absence. Daily 5-minute checks, quizzes, or any work missed because of an unexcused tardy or absence will receive a grade of zero. Attendance is your primary responsibility and key to success in mathematics. Once you reach 3 unexcused tardies, you and your parent or guardian will be notified. If there is a fourth (4th) unexcused tardy after parent notification, you will receive a Thursday after-school assignment from 3-5 p.m. A fifth (5th) unexcused tardy will necessitate a parent-student-counselor-teacher conference to determine options available to the student.

Work missed because of an excused tardy or absence can be made up at the rate of one class period per tardy or absence, if the assignment was given during the missed time. If homework is due the day you are absent, it is also due the day you return. Work cannot be made up for unexcused absences or tardies!

If you miss six (6) hours of class time, you will be in danger of falling too far behind in your coursework. If this occurs, or you foresee an extended absence due to illness, please make special arrangements with your counselor and me to make up the missed work. Should you reach 8 hours of absence, your parent or guardian will be notified that you are in danger of losing credit for the class. Should your hours of absence exceed 10 hours, a "loss of credit" notification letter will be sent to your home.

For SIA or pre-arranged (informational) absences, you should obtain the assignment(s) beforehand and turn it (them) in when you return, or make up the work within one week after your return. A missed quiz or test can be taken preceding the excused absence, or made up within one week after your return.

Grading and Assignments

Grading Scale

The following grading scale applies to all assignments:

< 70.0% = F
70.0-74.9% = D; 75.0-77.4% = D+
77.5-77.9% = C-; 80.0-82.4% = C; 82.5-84.9% = C+
85.0-87.4% = B-; 87.5-89.9% = B; 90.0-92.4% = B+
92.5-94.9% = A-; 95.0% or greater = A

Weighting of Grades

The following weighted percentages by category are combined to equal 100% of the total trimester grade:

Attendance = 20%
Math Notebook, Journal, Glossary, and Portfolio pages = 20%
Daily Work and Quizzes = 20%
Chapter Assessments = 20%
Final Exam = 20%

Daily Classwork

Activities such as warm-ups, quizzes, and daily work are due the day they are assigned. Any daily work or homework turned in early may receive challenge credit. Projects, challenge activities, or extensions are due on the day specified by the original assignment. Homework is due at the start of the next class period. All work must be done in pencil or erasable pen. Use of a pen is acceptable for your math glossary or final written report of a project. No late work for full credit will be accepted. The highest possible grade for late work is half-credit. No chapter assignments or unit work turned in after the test will receive credit for that unit.

Individuals or cooperative work groups may be chosen at random to present solutions to daily 5-minute checks, quizzes, homework, and challenges (selected from participating students). You will be required to show your work on all assignments, and when chosen, explain your reasoning in solving the problem(s).

Math Journal and Notebook

Your math coursework should be kept in a three-ring binder, divided into these 4 sections: 1) handouts, 2) glossary pages, 3) journal notes and reflections, and 4) portfolio pages. Notebook checks worth 5 points each will be conducted at least once during each unit or chapter covered during the school year.

Classroom and Behavior

The Yakima School District’s code of conduct and dress code apply in all classroom situations. If a student disrupts the learning environment for others, he or she will be moved to a different location in the room, apart from the others, for the remainder of the class period. If this relocation meets with resistance, or is subsequently followed by a second disruption, the student will be sent to the main office for a meeting with the appropriate administrator.

The following guidelines apply to all expected situations and planned activities in my classes. I will be as fair and consistent as possible, yet you must realize some situations demand more immediate attention than others.

1. Disruption of class activities involving teacher-student participation and attention will have the following consequences:

First Offense: a 10-minute detention to be served prior to the next class meeting. If this detention is not served, the student will receive a 2-hour Thursday after-school assignment from 3-5 P.m.., to be served on the Thursday of the following week. This gives the student a one-week notice and time to prepare for that afternoon.

Second Offense: a 2-hour Thursday School assignment from 3-5 p.m., to be served on the Thursday of the following week. If the 2-hour Thursday after-school assignment is not served, the student will automatically receive a 4-hour assignment for the next two Thursday Schools. If the Thursday after-school obligation is not met, the student may be suspended or placed on a behavioral contract, in accordance with the decision of all parties involved.

Third Offense: the student may be suspended or placed on a behavioral contract, in accordance with the decision of all parties involved, including teacher, administrator, parent/guardian, student, and counselor.

2. Leaving the room without teacher approval or for an unexcused reason. This action includes leaving early, prior to the bell or actual class dismissal. The progression of consequences is the same as that described above.

3. Acts of insubordination and/or refusal to cooperate. This action will receive a written notice upon the first occurrence. Any subsequent occurrence will warrant immediate removal from the class with a written referral, a phone call to the parent or guardian, and a mandatory student-parent-teacher-administrator-counselor conference before the student will be allowed to return to the classroom!

Guidelines for Success

If you follow these principles, you will succeed in mathematics, as well as, in life:

1. Always try your best.

2. Learning is continuous and lifelong.

3. Respecting yourself makes it easier to respect others.

4. Respect the rights and property of everyone, including yourself.

5. Ask questions when you want to learn.

6. Take risks when you want to succeed.

These class expectations are a math notebook requirement, which go in front of the divided sections. Please sign the form below, along with a parent or guardian, verifying that you both have read and understand this document. Return it to me by the next class meeting to receive 5 points credit. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to help you learn more mathematics, acquire new skills, and succeed.
