Social Studies and Science Curriculum

The fifth grade curriculum correlates our units of Science and Social Studies. The science program includes representative topics from the biological, physical, and earth science. Learning experiences include predicting, classifying, and measuring for purposes of achieving understanding of how scientists work and what they learn about the universe. The instructional approach is hands-on and inquiry based. We study these programs while relating this information to the state of Washington. We study Washington State's history, government, geography and the Oregon Trail. Using an interactive and hands-on curriculum emphasizing thinking skills and strategies to explore the world is the cornerstone of fifth grade social studies and science. Students use the science process skills and the scientific method as they study the world in which they live. Experiments, demonstrations, reports, projects, presentations, cooperative learning groups, and the Internet are integrated throughout each unit to strengthen the student's knowledge base and application of that knowledge.
